2021 Listing: https://www.planadviser.com/awards/2021-planadviser-top-100-retirement-plan-advisers/

Basis: Based on total plans and assets under advisement. The list is drawn solely from a set of quantitative variables and information in the survey supplied by the advisers themselves. For an adviser to be eligible for recognition in the Top 100, a submission of the Retirement Plan Adviser Survey is required. For an adviser to be eligible for recognition in the 2019 listing, a sub-segment of the questions from the 2018 survey was used to determine eligibility for the 2019 Top 100.

The list includes advisers at the top of their respective peer groups in terms of assets under advisement (AUA) or number of retirement plan clients—including sponsors of defined contribution (DC), defined benefit (DB) and nonqualified plans.

To become eligible for this quantitative listing, advisers must complete the annual PLANADVISER Retirement Plan Adviser Survey, fielded each September. Respondents are divided into categories for evaluation—these categories are defined by the number of advisers, plus support staff, in the practice.

The eligibility standards continue to change each year, to reflect the ever-improving qualifications of those submitting in each category. In 2019, individuals needed a minimum of 100 plans or $1 billion in retirement plan AUA; small teams had to advise at least $1.7 billion in retirement plan assets or 115 plans; large teams needed $3.5 billion or more in retirement plan AUA or 200 or more plans; and mega teams had to oversee at least $12 billion in retirement plan AUA or 300 plans. Congratulations to all of those advisers listed!

Basis: Anonymous employee surveys. In its eighth annual program, P&I worked with Best Companies Group, Harrisburg, Pa., to collect and analyze survey data to identify companies that stood out for their efforts to create a culture that supports employees and brings out their best. Best Companies Group, Harrisburg, Pa., undertook a two-step process to develop the list, designed to gather detailed data about each organization. To participate, a firm had to have at least 20 employees in the U.S., have at least $100 million of discretionary assets under management and be in business for at least one year.

In part one, the employer completed a questionnaire about the firm's policies, practices, benefits and demographics. U.S. employment numbers for each firm were confirmed by Best Companies in late July.

In part two, employees were emailed an engagement and satisfaction survey that consisted of 78 statements. Employees were asked to respond on a 1-to-5 scale of "Disagree Strongly" to "Agree Strongly." Two open-ended questions also were asked, probing what the firm did to make it a place where people wanted to work and what else the company could do to increase an employee's satisfaction and productivity.

The data were combined, which allowed Best Companies to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the participating companies.

Employees' responses accounted for 75% of the total score, with the employer responses accounting for the remaining 25%.

For the final step, a Best Companies workplace assessment manager examined the data to verify and finalize the rankings. At P&I's request, firms were ranked against others of similar size.

Basis: Once advisers are nominated, they are invited to fill out an online form to enter the judging process. If they meet certain criteria, they can be considered for the PLANADVISER Top 100. However, to be judged for the Retirement Plan Adviser of the Year awards, they are asked to complete a second form, providing various details about their practice and answering essay questions. While it is an honor to be nominated, advisers can only be part of the PLANADVISER Top 100 or eligible for the PLANSPONSOR Retirement Plan Adviser of the Year awards if they take the time to supply the information online. From that group, judges select finalists from each category to compete for that respective award. Those finalists are asked to provide references from clients and peers, and, after background checks and interviews with the judges are completed, a winner is selected.
